Date: May 30, 2024 Embracing a New Chapter: Graduating from Capella University with an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy

I’m excited to share that I’ve officially graduated from Capella University with a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy, specializing in sex therapy. This milestone represents years of hard work, learning, and personal growth, and I’m thrilled to start this new chapter.

A Journey of Learning and Growth

My time at Capella University has been both challenging and rewarding. The rigorous academic program gave me a solid foundation in various therapeutic approaches, and my specialized training in sex therapy has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to tackle complex issues related to intimacy and sexual health.

Specialization in Sex Therapy

Specializing in sex therapy has been a transformative experience. This field requires a deep understanding of human sexuality, relational dynamics, and the courage to discuss sensitive topics with empathy and professionalism. Through my coursework and clinical practice, I’ve learned how to support individuals and couples as they explore their sexual identities, overcome sexual dysfunctions, and enhance their intimate connections.

Therapeutic Modalities

Throughout my studies, I’ve become particularly knowledgeable in three therapeutic modalities: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Narrative Therapy. Each of these approaches has significantly shaped my therapeutic practice and philosophy.

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): EFT focuses on the importance of emotional bonds and attachment in relationships. This approach helps clients understand and reshape their emotional responses, fostering deeper connections and intimacy. It has been instrumental in my work with couples, helping them reconnect and strengthen their relationships.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): IFS offers a unique perspective by viewing the mind as composed of various "parts," each with its own thoughts and feelings. This approach helps clients achieve internal harmony by addressing conflicts among these parts. IFS has been invaluable in helping individuals navigate their inner worlds and heal from past traumas.
  • Narrative Therapy: Narrative Therapy empowers clients to reframe their personal stories, enabling them to construct narratives that promote resilience and self-empowerment. By externalizing problems and viewing them as separate from the individual, clients can gain new perspectives and create positive change in their lives.

A Collaborative "Way of Being"

Central to my approach is a Collaborative "way of being," inspired by Harlene Anderson's work. This philosophy emphasizes the importance of co-creating the therapeutic process with clients, recognizing them as experts in their own lives. In this collaborative space, therapy becomes a partnership where clients and therapists work together to explore, understand, and address challenges.

Looking Ahead

As I step into this new chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for the support and guidance I’ve received along the way. I’m eager to apply my knowledge and skills to help individuals, couples, and families navigate their unique challenges and achieve their goals.

In addition, I’m committed to furthering my expertise by completing the certification process with the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). This certification will enhance my ability to provide specialized care in sex therapy and affirm my dedication to professional growth and excellence.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow as a therapist and to making a positive impact in the lives of those I serve.
